Edexcel

Edexcel offer  two GCSE courses, one modular (Mathematics B) and one linear (Mathematics A).

If you are doing linear – that's simple. You take an exam at the end of the course.

If you are doing modular, then it depends on which year you're in.

If you are starting GCSE Maths this year (September 2012) – presumably in year 10 – then you will take all three modules together at the end of the course – most probably June 2014, but possible earlier in November 2013 if you have completed the course by that time. This reflects the new rule that all GCSEs from the 2014 exams onwards should be linear, not modular. The modular style of the course is designed so that you can take mock exams covering just part of the course (one of the modules), which might be easier to work towards. However, come the proper exams, you have to do all three modules together. So it’s really a linear course taught in modules.

If you are in year 11, then you’ll be following the old specification and will probably have already taken one or two of the three modules and will take module three next November, March or, most likely, June with the possibility of a resit in November 2013.
